Minister commends Cross River on implementation of UBEC goals
Minister of State for Education, Prof Anthony Gozie Anwuka, has commended Cross River State government for its successful implementation of the goals as well as keying into the vision and aspirations of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
Anwuka made the commendation when he led other stakeholders in education on a courtesy visit on Cross River State governor, Prof. Ben Ayade, in Calabar, as part of activities to mark the 15th quarterly meeting of the Commission.
In his words: “We are glad to be here in this state, a state that came up, volunteered to host this meeting when the state that was assigned to host it defaulted.”
He added: “Your state has very much keyed into our goals in this direction. Your vision to basic education in this country is wonderful and we are going to task you on that, as I have immediately drafted the Executive Secretary of UBEC to be part of your vision and direction.”
Anwuka affirmed their resolve to fashion out ways aimed at boosting operations of UBEC and SUBEB in the various states, as well as offering a new lease of life to basic education in the country.
Admitting that the Commission has had problems in the past, Anwuka explained that “the agencies of UBEC have accepted the challenge to put in the right direction our basic education endeavors in this country.”
Responding, Governor Ayade encouraged the Minister and his team to proffer, during the summit, “a new agenda and drive, that would reconstruct the concept of basic education.”
According to the governor, “this partnership we are having today is to create a new vista of opportunities where people will look beyond the political contracts that come with UBEC funds, to actually design an academic program that would create a new direction, future and prosperity of the nation.”
Concerned about the situation where UBEC funds are allegedly “reduced to political patronage and basic day to day survival,” Ayade observed that “any accumulation of materialism that has no regard for moral integrity is a failure.”
The governor also charged “whoever sits and superintends over UBEC funds to add value to the basic education of the country, embrace the training and retraining of teachers while reconstructing the value of UBEC for the good of the citizenry.”
Ayade who enjoined Nigerians to have faith in the country and in President Muhammadu Buhari, averred that “things are tough now but will definetly get better,” adding, “we have a man who knows where he is going, his integrity is going ahead of him and redeeming the image of Nigeria and we are getting there.”
