Green Carnival: Gov Ayade, Ita-Giwa Plant Trees in Calabar
Cross River State Governor, Prof Ben Ayade, Senator Florence Ita-Giwa and other dignitaries on Tuesday planted trees in Calabar, the state capital, southern Nigeria, as part of the campaign to combat climate change which is the theme of this year’s Carnival Calabar.
The Governor, his wife, Dr. Linda, and his guests embarked on the’Plant a Tree’ march to create awareness about the campaign.
Each of them carried young plants which they later planted to drive home the message.
Governor Ayade, a professor of Environmental Science, said during the event that the entire state, particularly the state capital, would go green by the time five million trees are planted across the state.
He said youths would not only plant trees for the fun of it but would also earn a living from engaging in tree planting.
On Boxing Day, Governor Ayade’s wife, Dr. Linda, had hosted thousands of children at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar to a Christmas party where the children were also sensitized on the need to plant trees to protect the environment.
