Cross River, Spanish firm to establish world-class poultry farm
As part of an initiative to boost the economy of the state, the Cross River State governor, Senator Ben Ayade, has concluded arrangements with a Spanish firm, Cavenco of Barcelona, Spain for the establishment of a world-class integrated poultry farm.
The farm which is to be sited in Ikom, is expected to commence with six thousand per day bird production and later increase to 100 thousand birds per day within five… years of its establishment.
Governor Ayade who announced this cheering news in Calabar when he received the firm in his office, yesterday, said the initiative is a public private partnership (PPP) meant to ensure sustainability and create jobs.
His words: “Nigeria as a country spends billions of naira annually importing poultry products. It is obvious that as a nation, we cannot continue with this primitive consumption style and for us to add value on our naira, we need to cut down on things that will reduce our dependence on foreign goods.”
Ayade described the investment as a golden opportunity that will impact positively on the economy of the state maintaining that “this is going to create almost two thousand sustainable jobs, while also providing high quality meat to Nigerians and other neighbouring countries.
“It is an integrated farm that would span over four thousand hectres of land and supported by a British consortium that will make it more efficient, which is why government has instituted a structural and normative framework to drive the process.”
The governor disclosed that the choice of Ikom was very strategic because it was not only a border town that would create access to the international markets in Cameroun and Central Africa, but will also connect the surrounding markets.
“The choice of Ikom for the integrated farm is a clear indication that we are committed to professionalism. Our emphasis is that if foreign investors are coming to invest money in our state, let us not drive them through political calculations, but observe core business values.
The governor described Cavenco as “a business concern with a high net worth, capacity and global spread. ”
Earlier, Managing Director, Cavenco Investment, Barcelona, Spain, Mrs. Nathalia Tenis, said their visit was a follow up to the governor’s earlier visit to their headquarters in Barcelona two months ago to finalize the agreement and documentation to kick start the poultry farm.
“We want to take advantage of the investment climate provided by the Cross River State Government to develop a high-tech integrated poultry complex that will supply the state and its environs high quality protein at affordable price,” she stated.
