C/River partners equipment maker, Liebherr on Superhighway, Seaport
As the grading of the 260 km superhighway nears completion, Cross River government and Liebherr Ltd, an earth moving and mining equipment company with branches in Germany and Nigeria, have agreed on a pact.
Leading a three-man team from Germany on an inspection of the various grading sites from Bakassi to Obudu, as well as work on the deep sea port, sales manager of the company, Rolf Bachmann said he was particularly impressed with the progress of the grading work, which he said was near 90 per cent completion.
“The next thing we need to do is arrange special machines to embark on the next phase of the project,” he told journalists.
According to Bachmann, special equipment for bridge and road construction will be brought in by his firm.
His words: “With the bush being cleared, one phase of the job is nearly completed. The job so far done looks impressive but now the difficult stuff starts. I think in two months the equipment will start arriving.”
Similarly, construction work on the ultramodern quality control laboratory for the superhighway and other projects embarked upon by the state government has commenced on the project site.
The facility, when completed, will be used for soil texture as well as testing the viability of asphalt, oil and diesel needed for the superhighway.
The Managing Director of Sudbraty Ltd, Chief Sunny Ikeokwu said: “We need an acceptable standard asphalt, soil texture including oil and diesel because what we are constructing is an international superhighway.”
Ikeokwu explained that already the fencing has commenced, pointing out that by April, the main construction will kick off.
“We have all the building materials in place and the concrete is on its way coming and we intend to start molding today.”
He added that upon completion, apart from the superhighway, Cross River will pride itself with the best quality control laboratory in Africa.
