Communal crisis: Ayade Commends FG’s Prompt Response
Cross River State governor, Prof Ben Ayade, monday, applauded the federal government’s swift intervention in the crisis-proned communities of the state.
The governor made the commendation when he received the Minister of Interior, Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Bello Danbazau, during a courtesy visit on him at the state executive chambers, Calabar.
“I thank you for making out time to pay this visit and for the choice to make the visit at such an early time from when the incident occurred, so that you can see the situations for yourself, “Ayade said, adding that “this is one of the swiftest responses I have seen.”
The governor, while applauding President Buhari and Acting president Osinbajo for their empathy, commitment and love for the state, said: that “that is why for we in Cross River State, we are fervently praying for the president’s early return because this is the President that has given us the highest appointment in the history of Nigeria.”
Intimating that CrossRiverians are known for peaceful coexistence while providing a shoulder for brothers to lean on in difficult times, Ayade wondered why the people of Wanihem and Wanikade who have lived together for years, have same ethnicity, history and heritage will allow the devil to trick them into chaos.
“We have always had these communal clashes occasioned by the normal nature that people seek farmlands, and if we check the background causes of all these clashes, it originates from poverty, hardship and an inegalitarian distribution of resources and opportunities,” Ayade remarked.
Appealing to the minister to use the period created through the visit to touch the lives of Bakassi returnees recently sacked by the Cameroon gendarmes, the governor said: “The people have been so dislocated that today, they live on canoes, canoes directly on top of water with a hut over the canoe and even the canoe is torn apart.”
Continuing, Ayade said: “Your coming is like a balm on a people who feel so pained, so beyond your physical visit to the location, you have come to tranquilize and reduce the hurt that we have as a people.”
Earlier, Danbazau informed the governor that he was in the state with his team as a federal government delegation on a fact finding mission in respect of the recent clash between Wanihem and Wanikade communities in Yala Local Government Area of the state.
The minister said” “The Federal Government is very much concerned about the clashes especially where it involves lives and property as well as displacement of citizens,” pointing out that “from here, we will go to the local government area to see things for ourselves so that we can go back, write a report with far reaching recommendations to ensure that it doesn’t happen again.”
Commending the Cross River government and the various security agencies in the state for their quick response aimed at halting the various fracas in the state, Danbazau disclosed that the federal government will collaborate with the state to check issues that could threaten the security of lives and property.
