Ayade Suspends Taxes/ Levies on Taxi drivers till further notice
The Governor of Cross River, Senator Ben Ayade has directed the immediate suspension of all taxes and levies currently being paid by taxi drivers in Calabar pending when government shall come out with a harmonized figure.
Ayade gave the directive when members of the Cross River State Drivers’ Association, led by the Chairman, Pastor Thomas Effiong Okon carried out a peaceful protest to the Governor’s Office to bring to the attention of the Governor the multiple taxes they were being made to pay daily by the various agencies and bodies in Calabar.
Governor Ayade who spoke through the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Barr. Tina Banku Agbor, also directed the immediate release of all impounded vehicles without delay, explaining that government will soon come out with a harmonized single figure for the interest of both the government and the association.
He said that he was committed to running a government that will help assuage the sufferings of the people and not to cause more hardship, stressing that it was based on this premise that his administration exempted the poor and low income earners from payment of taxes.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Cross River State Drivers’ Association, Pastor Thomas Effiong Okon said they decided to embark on the peaceful protest to draw the attention of the governor to their plight.

H/E, I want most sincerely thank you for your great leadership & marvelous works done to uplift the status of our state forward. I want to also appreciate you for your intelligent & immediate response to the suspension of all illegal extortion of monies from the poor(Taxi drivers) by so call agencies.
Firstly, knowing whom Akwa Ibom people are, in area fraudulence, you appointed an Ibibio man Mr. Mfon Bassey to be the chairman of C.T.R.A. He’s using all tricks & 419 senses to make money for himself, telling people that the Governor is a share holder in the business. It’s quite unfortunate.
BELOW ARE THE AMOUNT PAID BY TAXIES & BUSES DAILY:
1) Registration of vehicle –#12,500 by CTRA PER VEHICLE.
2) Selling of daily TIcket —#150 by CTRA
3) selling of daily ticket. —#100 by DOPT
4) selling of daily ticket——#150 by CAL. SOUTH & CAL. MUNICIPAL. LGA’S
5) selling of daily ticket—–#100 by COMMISSIONER FOR TRANSPORTATIONS
AMOUNT TO #500 daily
Sir, it’s quite unfortunate that, this agencies are using the name of the Governor in extorting this monies in presence of collecting revenue to the govt.
Please sir, kindly use your good office to help and reduce this amount to enable an average citizen live happily.
WE MUST SUPPORT AYADE’S GOVT. TO SUCCEED.
Good decision
This is good news sir. However, their rates should be made to reflect this as was obtainable when HE Donald Duke regulated their activities. Another suggestion I would like to respectfully offer is that taxation as a whole, be looked into in the state. A company- MaDish- that employed youths of this state, Essien Town, Calabar youths specifically, has had to withdraw from the state due to high tax rates. I understand it is not really possible to ascertain the validity or accuracy of company books of account, as what the company chooses to present is what one can make judgments on, but it would be better if tax quotations are made from the books of account for preceeding year, rather than the whims of the tax assessor. I will continue to raise awareness on this tax issue until something positive comes of it as even petty traders have been forced out of business. What is a state basically a civil service state going to use to generate revenue if the high tax rate forces business to foreclose or move away?
I want to also appreciate you for your intelligent & immediate response to the suspension of all illegal extortion of monies from the poor(Taxi drivers) by so call agencies. Where such information?
