Ayade Approves Conversion of 150 DOPT ad hoc Staff
As part of the effort to sanitize the Public Transport system in Cross River state, the Governor, Senator Ben Ayade, has approved the conversion of 150 ad hoc staff of the Department of Public Transportation to the state Civil Service.
Special Adviser, Department of Public Transportation, Mr. Gabriel Okulaja who disclosed this while speaking with press men in his office in Calabar said that beside the 150 staff, the Governor has also given directive for the full automation and computerization of DOPT.
Okulaja further disclosed that the governor has equally supported the Department with five operational vehicles for the DOPT urban towns of Calabar, Ugep, Ikom, Ogoja and Obudu to ensure a full fledge activities in the said urban areas, adding that the governor has equally approved Inter-city Transit system.
He explained that the Department under his leadership is committed to working in tone with the vision and direction of the governor’s developmental agenda, particularly in the transportation sector, adding that based on this reality, both the learner’s and driver’s license unit of the Department will be computerized, and the examination taken online.
The DOPT boss said that 10 computers, four for data capturing and six to be install at the training room for examination, stressing that he has understanding with partners for the equipping of the training room, provision of simulators, printing of tags and renovation of the DOPT office.
Okulaja also stated that the automation programme will lead to a point where every driver will have a unique Identity number and that DOPT intend to deliver mass transit in the state for four years with at least two to three corridors.
He stated that the Department has equally taken advantage of the CSR, Tax rebate and Social housing laws of the state to roll out a programme known as Enterprise Living where stakeholders of the DOPT like drovers and others will key into the Department’s Public Transportation Stakeholders Multipurpose Cooperative and be paying a certain amount to the cooperative every Friday, disclosing further that 14 cooperatives have already indicated interest to join the Multipurpose Cooperative.
Mr. Okulaja commended the the state governor, Senator Ben Ayade for the support given to DOPT and promised that the department will work to ensure the realization of the vision of the public transportation sector.
